All students entering a scheduled program of study which requires math or English courses must meet placement requirements of these courses.

Placement Tests

Placement may be dependant on twelfth grade transcripts and GPA, SAT and/or ACT scores, and GED scores; all of which are valid for 5 years. Additionally, students who are enrolled at another advanced schooling institution or college that is four-year submit their college transcripts for placement determination. Students that do not match the placement requirements based on these multiple measures has to take the Virginia Placement Test (VPT).

Students must submit their applications for admission to New River before taking the placement tests. Placement testing should be completed ahead of meeting with an adviser that is academic establish a program schedule.

Students can retake the placement test one time within one year associated with initial attempt associated with VPT. Placement test scores are valid for 5 years.

Exemptions for Placement Testing

New students are exempt from using the placement tests if they have obtained appropriate scores inside the past five years using one or a mixture of the following assessments. (The scores shown will be the minimum needed for exemption.)

Using the Virginia Placement Test at New River

Placement tests are given at our testing centers. Placement tests are not timed but generally will need between 2 and 3 hours. Please NOTE: You must start a placement test at least 3 hours prior to closing.

No appointment is important to take a placement test. Students will require a picture ID and their student identification number (A student ID number will soon be generated after completing the NRCC online application process). There isn’t any fee for placement testing.
